The Be Mighty Mom Ministry
God Is Not Rushing Your Obedience
Hello Reader,
As I typed the final period of my book, I felt my eyes well up with tears. I had actually done it. I had finished my book.
This past weekend was freezing in Florida. And I’m not just saying that in a dramatic way. It was actually below freezing. Instead of our original plan to go to EPCOT after swim lessons, my sweet husband told me to take the day and work on my book.
That night, as I was getting ready for bed, I looked over at my husband lying in bed playing video games, something he rarely does. I asked what he was playing. He immediately got defensive, saying he just needed to zone out after watching the kids all day. I stopped him and assured him I wasn’t judging at all. I told him, “I wish I had a Nintendo Switch so I could play Mario after a long day.”
With God’s guidance, I’ve been more hands-off when Mike gives me time alone. I’ve noticed a huge difference in his relationship with the boys, and a huge difference for me too.
With only five chapters left by the end of the day, I spent Sunday afternoon after church finishing the manuscript. As Mike looked after the kids again, I was able to sit in gratitude once I finished typing.
I looked over at Mike and said, “I just wrote a book.”
He was so excited for me that we took time to celebrate. Max had no idea what was happening, but he joined in anyway. Then Mike said, “Now that you’re done… I did something bad.”
The look on his face told me he was definitely up to something. Already knowing the answer, I asked, “Bad bad? Or bad good?”
“Bad good,” he said.
I looked at him, fully aware of what he had done. “I know exactly what you did.”
“There’s no way,” he said, completely confident.
“Fine,” I said. “I’ll write down what I think you did, and I’ll show you after you tell me.”
He left the room and came back holding a Nintendo Switch. Exactly what I had said I wanted. And exactly what I had written down.
This is something I’ve wanted for at least two years and talk about all the time, knowing we would never actually splurge on one. But after a weekend of watching the kids so I could finish my book, even under the same roof, he understood why I had always longed for it.
This experience really opened my eyes to how God works in our lives, especially when raising a child with disabilities. God places things on our hearts and minds repeatedly. Not because we lack faith or obedience, but because sometimes we’re afraid, and we don’t follow through right away.
When we’re finally ready to walk in God’s will and follow Jesus into our calling, we joyfully tell Him. But He already knows.
All this to say, even if it takes two years for you to finally obey God and step into your calling, that’s okay. God knows we need time to accept and time to obey. He doesn’t get angry with us for taking time. He delights in us walking in His ways.
Stay Mighty,
Devotional of the Week
Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.
There are callings God places on our hearts that don’t leave us alone. They resurface in quiet moments. They come back up in conversations. They linger in the background of our lives, even when we try to set them down.
Sometimes it isn’t rebellion that delays obedience. Sometimes it’s fear. Sometimes it’s exhaustion. Sometimes it’s the weight of responsibility, especially when you’re raising children who already require so much of you.
God understands this more than we give Him credit for.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God is not surprised by our pacing. We may plan our steps, hesitate, pause, or circle back, but the Lord is the One who establishes them.
Finishing that book didn’t happen overnight. It happened after seasons of waiting, doubting, and carrying more than felt manageable. And yet, when the moment came, everything aligned. Time was made. Support showed up. Provision followed obedience.
That is often how God works.
He doesn’t rush us into callings we’re not ready to carry. He prepares us quietly, patiently, and relationally. Especially for mothers raising children with additional needs, God knows obedience has to fit inside real life. Inside caregiving. Inside exhaustion. Inside love.
Walking in God’s will doesn’t always look bold or immediate. Sometimes it looks like finally saying yes when you’re ready. And God honors that yes, no matter how long it took to arrive.
Journal Prompt
What has God placed on my heart that keeps resurfacing, even when I try to ignore it?
What fears or responsibilities have made it difficult for me to take the next step?
How might God be establishing my steps, even in this season of waiting?
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being patient with me. Thank You for knowing my limitations and still calling me forward. Help me trust that You are establishing my steps, even when progress feels slow or imperfect.
Give me courage to obey when You prompt me and peace when the timing is still unfolding. Help me believe that You are not disappointed in my pace, but present with me every step of the way.
Teach me to walk with You, not ahead of You or behind You, but in step with Your will.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
