God’s Heart for Advocacy Starts with Dignity

Hello Reader,

This week, I’ve been reflecting on the balance between advocacy and dignity. Two values that often walk hand-in-hand, yet sometimes feel like they’re pulling in different directions.

As a Christian autism mom and ministry leader, my goal isn’t to coach from my own perspective, but from God’s. Lately, scrolling through social media has felt heavy. There’s so much pain and frustration being shared in the name of awareness; and while awareness is vital, I felt the Holy Spirit gently remind me: “Even in advocacy, remember the dignity of the one you’re advocating for.”

Our children are not just part of our story, they are stories God Himself is still writing. When we talk about meltdowns, hard days, or the challenges that come with raising neurodivergent or medically complex kids, we’re not just telling our story… we’re describing their lowest moments. Those moments are sacred. They deserve gentleness.

There’s a way to speak truth without stripping dignity. We can call out ableism without showcasing our children’s suffering as proof. We can raise awareness and raise the standard for how we speak about those God entrusted to us.

Proverbs 31:8–9 reminds us,

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.

But just a few verses earlier, we’re reminded that our words should be “wise” and that “kindness is the law on her tongue” (Proverbs 31:26).

Both can coexist.

We can advocate and protect.

We can speak boldly and love gently.

We can tell the truth and maintain dignity.

So this week, as we step into prayer and reflection together, let’s ask God to help us share our stories with wisdom. Stories that bring light, not heaviness. Stories that restore dignity, not take it away.

Because advocacy without dignity isn’t the God kind of advocacy.

Stay Mighty,

Devotional of the Week

Proverbs 31:26

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

This verse paints a picture of what it looks like to speak with both strength and grace. The Proverbs 31 woman is NOT silent. She speaks, but her words are rooted in wisdom and guided by kindness.

That balance matters, especially for us as moms walking the road of advocacy. We are called to speak up (Proverbs 31:8–9), yet we are also called to do so in a way that preserves the dignity of those we love.

When we share our children’s stories online, in prayer groups, or with family, we’re handling something sacred. God entrusted us with their narrative. The goal isn’t to silence awareness, but to infuse it with compassion, respect, and gentleness. The fruit of the Spirit in motion (Galatians 5:22–23).

The truth is, we don’t have to share every detail for our voices to make an impact.

Reflection:

When we advocate from a place of exhaustion, it’s easy to focus on what’s wrong. But when we advocate from a God mindset, we focus on what’s right in His eyes: justice, dignity, mercy, and truth.

This week, let’s check our heart posture. Are we sharing stories to connect, educate, and uplift? Or are we unintentionally sharing out of hurt and seeking validation from others?

God reminds us in Ephesians 4:29:

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Every post, every conversation, every “awareness” moment is an opportunity to build up. To show the world that our children’s lives reflect the image of God, full of purpose and worth.

Journal Prompt

How can I honor my child’s dignity when I share about our journey this week? What does “God-centered advocacy” look like in my home and online presence? What would it look like to let my advocacy build up rather than weigh down?

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for trusting me with the sacred calling of motherhood and for the honor of raising a child made perfectly in Your image. Teach me to speak with both truth and tenderness.

Help me use my voice to bring light, not heaviness. Let my words reflect Your heart: wise, kind, and rooted in dignity. Guard my child’s story, Lord, and give me discernment to share only what honors You and them.

May my advocacy always point others to the goodness of Your love.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Be Mighty Mom Ministry

Hi, I’m Ash, host of The Be Mighty Mom Podcast and reverend at The Be Mighty Mom Ministry. I left my corporate job at Disney when my son was diagnosed with a rare disease. In the middle of hospital stays, therapies, and an autism diagnosis, I found myself questioning God more than I ever thought I would. Now, I help other moms walking the road of autism, rare disease, or medical complexity draw closer to God in the middle of their doubt, grief, and exhaustion through prayer. Each week, you’ll get scripture, encouragement, and honest reflections to remind you that God hasn’t left you. He’s walking with you.
